Priotec blows life into Norrbotten with fiber from Nexans

Jan 12, 2023

On a November day in Vidsel, Priotec is out in the field blowing 2 x 9000 meters of  GAHSL 96 ribbon fiber cable from Nexans. They do it on behalf of Älvsbyn municipality in collaboration with IT-Norrbotten.  Magnus Persson, our salesman for infra in the north, had a talk with Priotec's founder Robert Håland.

Can you tell us about Priotec and what you work with?
We are a company with broad experience in fiber and broadband. Our concentration is mainly in industry and regional networks. A typical work week can be in a wind farm, underground in a mine, a power line or switchgear area.
In addition to blowing cable or hanging in poles, we weld and measure cables that have been mounted.

What makes you unique in the fiber industry?
We have the privilege of working together with our customers, where we can develop solutions for each specific assignment and find suppliers of the material we want to work with. Each project usually requires its own special solution to achieve the goal. We can produce enclosures for pole lines or for switches and ODF in mines, etc. In short, we like challenges.

What determines which cable you choose in your projects?

  • The cable that we choose must, in addition to meeting tomorrow's requirements, also have a history with a good reputation.
  • It must be adapted and tested for what you intend to use it for – not only approved for.
  • For example, outdoors, or directly located.
  • It must be available on the market without the need for special orders.
  • It must be easy to work with in all mounting joints, such as blowing and splicing, etc.
  • It must also be able to be delivered in long lengths.

“ We never have to worry about the product being defect when we are out in the field ”

Robert Håland

founder Priotec

Today you have chosen to work with GAHSL, why did you chose this particular type of cable?
We advantageously use GAHSL when we have to blow long distances without joints on cable. It is fantastic to blow in regular 40/32 or 40/29 hose, where we have lengths of over 3km between each blowing pit. It is easy to loop when needed. As an example, when we installed an 11 km long GAHSL 48 without joints on the stretch. Then we could easily loop 5.5 km from the drum and then turn the equipment around and keep on blowing.

How is GAHSL to work with?
It is robust, nice properties for blowing, easy to cling to cable ladders, fantastic to peel/unmantle, clear marking of both cable and fiber.

Has GAHSL met your expectations of how a cable should be?
GAHSL is at the forefront of our expectations and has over the years presented surprisingly positive qualities.

What do you appreciate most about the cables you use?
The security of us getting what we order when we need it.

Are there differences from other cables that you work with.
Over the years, we have worked with a lot of different cables from different manufacturers and encountered different difficulties. For the past 10 years, we have concentrated on Nexans cables and it is not chance that decided that choice.

Do you feel like the installations you make are future-proof?
Absolutely, our installations are future-proof. With the material we use, the facilities will last well above the horizon. However, one cannot prevent external influences such as in a mine where explosives are used in their daily operations.

How do you see the development of cables, what will be required in the future?
Nexans is at the forefront of development on the cables we work with. Future cables will require more wires in the same cable. While maintaining weight per km and of course the same or better characteristics at placement. I'm looking forward to try out that cable when it hits the market.

How do you see Nexans as a supplier of cables?
Over the years, Nexans has shown that they know as much about customer care/relationship as they do about cable manufacturing. We always have a close and open dialogue where we feel great confidence in  what is promised in connection with manufacturing and deliveries. When it comes to quality products, I am convinced that Nexans' quality department does a fantastic job. We never have to worry that the product would be defect when we are out in the field.

We thank Robert for the talk and are happy that Priotec chooses our cables in Norrland's tough environment, a confirmation that our cables are developed for a Nordic climate.
