Kabelvärden #1 2022: A revolution in the world of cables
May 19, 2022A new generation of power cables
Stories about news in the cable world are often about small steps forward - one or two percent here or a millimeter there. But now both Aron Andersson, Nexans Sweden's product manager for power and installation cable, as well as Mats Isaksson, production manager at LKAB in Gällivare, are eager to tell.
- This is a revolution! It is a completely new generation of cable, exclaims Aron Andersson.
- Absolutely, says Mats Isaksson. We at LKAB save time and the work environment is much better. And I think it's not just us who will be happy with the new power cable that Nexans has developed. I can imagine that anyone who mounts cable on ladders will be very happy.
But let´s start from the beginning. LKAB's mine in Gällivare is a huge underground network of passages. Around 1,700 people work here, of which almost 600 are employed at LKAB. Underground there is about 400 km of paved road and around the double unpaved.
In and between the mine tunnels, cable is routed to power stations that sit at a gap of around 250 meters, most often a cable with an area of 150 mm2 and an outer diameter of just over 40 millimeters is used. These are several kilometers each year that are hung on hooks and threaded over water pipes and ventilation drums.
Three years ago, Nexans visited LKAB in Gällivare. Nexans´ representatives received a stern reprimand from the electricians, who complained that the power cables were very stiff.
- They told us that we must do something about the rigid power cables, which were also difficult to peel, says Aron Andersson.
Aron Andersson was hardly surprised. In fact, it was a known problem worldwide, affecting all manufacturers' halogen-free cables. Because these cables must withstand, among other things, heat, cold and sharp stones, they are equipped with a thick sheath, where the requirements that they must be halogen-free further contribute to the rigidity.
