Kabelvärden #2 2022: Learnings from a flood
Dec 13, 2022Climate change means that we can count on more unstable weather. It can be heat waves as well as torrential rain.
In August 2021, Gävle flooded. Basements with meter cabinets and other electrical equipment were filled with water. Water also rose over cable cabinets and network stations. Nevertheless, the electricity network in Gävle managed quite well. Now other network owners and installers can take advantage of the experiences from the flood.
A foretaste of a new future was seen on August 17–18, 2021, when it rained 166.2 millimeters in 24 hours in Gävle, of which 102 millimeters fell in two hours. As it normally rains 70-80 millimeters throughout the month of August in the area, the downpour caused major damage. Houses were flooded, roads were washed away, cars ended up under water, to name a few things. Electricity and water are not a good combination. Gävle Energi had a hard time.
The society and the infrastructure are not built to meet this amount of precipitation in such a short time. Fredrik Andersson, then contracting manager at Gävle Energi, today operations manager at the industry association Elinorr, talks about two things that stood out.
- One was that there was infrastructure that ended up completely under water, such as electricity, fiber and roads. The second was that the electricity in many houses went into the basement, where the meter cabinets and power stations were also placed. These ended up under water in many cases.

Under water, nothing happens to the cables, unless the jacket is damaged. However, it is more sensitive at the terminations and connections. There, we always recommend that the installers use cable termination to seal.
Wind is often worse for cables than water. We therefore recommend burial in the first place and insulation of overhead lines in the second place.
Prevent damages by placing electrical infrastructure and other equipment in the right place. Customer connections such as meter cabinets should be installed in facade cabinets on the outer wall or ground meter cabinets outdoors, not indoors or down in a basement.
When roads are built or rebuilt, it is important for owners of electricity networks and other network infrastructure to keep track of what is happening. Cable cabinets or network stations can suddenly end up lower than their surroundings.
