Condition Check

Jan 21, 2024

When your power grid has been in use for a few years or is not performing as it should, it may be time to conduct a condition check. This is a good preventive measure that provides you with a comprehensive overview of the condition of your cable network. It serves as a solid basis when deciding how long you should keep cables in operation, including the risks associated with an increasing number of operational disruptions. A status check provides an opportunity to make a better, safer, and economically advantageous reinvestment decision.

Many cables out there have installation damage and other mechanical issues that have occurred during their years of operation. For example, water may have penetrated the cable, causing the sheath to corrode and water trees to form in the insulation (treeing), ultimately leading to PD/arcing and then failure.

Through methods such as Tangens Delta measurement, grounding check, insulation testing, and shield resistance measurement, one can assess the status of the cables and detect any weakening before they impact the reliability of the power grid.

Condition checks on older cables are performed in the medium-voltage segment (12-24 kV), and the cables we recommend keeping an extra eye on include those that have failed without external influence or any other natural cause. First-generation PEX cables with an outer conductive layer of graphite and conductive tape. Cable sections that fall outside approved values in grounding checks. Cables with PVC sheath, cables where sheath testing has not been carried out, and existing cable sections that are planned to be joint with new ones.
