Electrical Installation Fit for a Castle
Nov 18, 2024Electrical Installation Fit for a Castle!
On the shores of Lake Åsunden, where Torpa Stone House has stood since the 15th century, a new grand manor now rises – a tribute to original 17th-century designs, initiated by the lord of the castle, Pehr Zethelius. When Nexans' product manager, Jonas Brännström, visits the site, he is greeted by the majestic work of recreating history with sustainable materials.
Amidst this timeless craftsmanship, the electrical firm Elatek, led by electricians Mats Rodhe and Zack Larsson, has installed the electrical system from scratch, with approximately 90% of the cables sourced from Nexans. Today, Jonas introduces Mats and Zack to Nexans' new FQQ Easy LED cable – a flat, double-insulated cable perfect for downlights. Downlights will be plentiful in this modern yet historically inspired building, where smart lighting control will create the perfect ambiance in the beautiful rooms.

Not every day you work on a castle, is it?
It’s truly special to install electrical systems in a newly constructed castle inspired by original 17th-century drawings. Plus, it’s so close to Torpa Stone House, with over 500 years of history. We’ve worked with Pehr before and are thrilled to contribute to his vision of restoring the area’s old grandeur. It feels both honorable and enjoyable to be part of something so unique. And it’s nice that we get to use modern, sustainable materials!
Speaking of which, you’re holding Nexans’ FQQ Easy LED – what do you think?
When pulling cables in tight downlight spaces, it’s often cramped and tricky, but the FQQ Easy LED slid in smoothly with no issues. It’s easy to strip, which isn’t always the case with flat cables, but here it worked very well despite my tool for round cables. Both the outer sheath and insulation were easy to handle. We’ve tried many cables, but this one feels unique. It has just the right balance of friction, softness, and sturdiness, so we can work efficiently with quick connectors and achieve a neat installation. It makes our work both faster and more enjoyable!
How does it feel to be part of a project like this?
It’s impressive. Walking around here, you think about the history, and it feels like a place you only get the chance to work on once in a lifetime. That Pehr is fully committed to building something that follows tradition makes the project even more unique. We’re proud of our work here.
Challenges in a project like this?
The sheer amount of cable needed! There’s so much that we’re using unusual colors to keep everything organized – when you see purple cables, you know you’re running out of options in the color palette!
Do you have more colors on your wish list for Santa?
I’m not sure; every installer knows you have to get creative, so we’ll manage somehow.
How does the aesthetic of the past meet today’s technology in a castle?
Being part of a modern installation in a historic setting, where both today’s technology and the aesthetics of the past meet, is an inspiring challenge for all of us. In a project like this, where nothing is left to chance, it’s crucial to work with materials you know will perform. Nexans’ cables are reliable, easy to handle, and well-suited here. We’re satisfied, and so is probably Pehr when he moves into a castle where everything is crafted with care and quality. The fact that the cable is also produced in the same Västgöta forests is likely appreciated by Pehr as he aims for as much local sourcing as possible.
Yes, what would Torpa say if we handed this over to the Danes again!
Thank you for letting us be part of this fantastic project! We look forward to seeing the “flat” light up like never before!
