From High Voltage to Local Grids – TC Kraft Powers Jämtland’s Electrification

So, what's happening in Jämtland, André?

Right now, we’re in the middle of a major upgrade. All cables that cross Svenska Kraftnäts power lines need to be moved underground into protective conduits. Otherwise, in the case of a ground fault, the potential difference could cause some serious trouble.

Sounds like a job with... potential.

Yeah, absolutely! The project stretches from one side of the county to the Norwegian border. We’re talking miles of cables that need to be buried. So far, we’ve plowed through 7 out of 20 plans, and we’ll be working on several substations and cable cabinets along the way. We’ve got work lined up until the end of this year and a good part of next year.

And it’s Nexans cable all the way, right?

Yep, in this case, we’re working for Jämtkraft, and as far as I know, they exclusively use Nexans cables. We have seven people at TC Kraft working full-time on their distribution grid, and the collaboration is running smoothly.

You seem happy with their choice of cable too?

Absolutely! Nexans products are top-notch. We work with several other grid companies and have tested many cable suppliers, but we almost always end up with Nexans – whether it’s a small installation or high voltage work. I dare say that my colleagues and I are really pleased with that choice.

Stop, you’re making me blush.

Nah, it's just the truth. Nexans cables are incredibly easy to strip and perfect to work with, for example, when turning. They’re round, flexible, easy to bend, and keep their shape. We’ve never had any issues with them. Never!

Ok, keep going…

Many other cables on the market aren’t as easy to work with – they can be rough, hard to strip, and lose their shape when bent. The fact that Nexans cables are always in stock at our wholesalers is also a big plus; it makes our everyday work so much easier.

Sounds like everything’s working as it should. What’s your view on electrification in society?

To put it simply, we’ve got more work than we can handle. No risk of being idle here!

How do you manage that?

We have great partnerships with schools and take in many interns and apprentices every year to contribute to the industry. It might be due to our location or that not everyone continues with electrical work after school, but it’s still not easy to find the right people, especially for high voltage.

Hasn’t the TV series "Högspänning" helped with that?

Actually, yes! We recently hired a girl straight from school who was inspired by the show. But there’s definitely more work to be done to attract more people into high voltage.

You get a crystal ball, what do you see for the cable world?

Oh, that’s a tough one. Honestly, I don’t feel like I’m missing anything. What we have today works great, from small service jobs to large projects with custom orders. So, I’d say I’m satisfied – and that’s pretty nice to be.

Sounds wonderful. Lastly, can you tell us a bit about TC Kraft?

We do everything electrical – from small installations to large grid projects. We’ve been at it for a long time, and I’m actually the second-generation electrician working in the company. We’re ready and charged up to support Sweden’s electrification!

Thanks for the chat, André.
