Kabelvärden # 1 2025: Inauguration with an Environmental Focus
Apr 24, 2025
From the inauguration of Nexans Sweden´s new factory for Middle-Voltage cables on April 2nd 2025.
Nexans has inaugurated a new factory for medium-voltage cables with thermoplastic insulation, TPI. Join us on a journey that begins with a scolded father and ends with the AMCL cable, which reduces customers’ CO2 footprints.
One day six years ago, when Lars Josefsson, Managing Director BU Nordics, came home from work, his son gave him a piercing look.
“Dad, what are you doing for the environment at your job?” he demanded.
Lars Josefsson finally managed to say that Nexans was certified according to ISO 14001—that it was a big deal.
His son was NOT impressed.
Soon, with the help of Google, a calculator, and an environmental consultant, Lars Josefsson realized that Nexans Sweden was emitting 220,000 tons of CO2 every year. From then on, sustainability topped the agenda at all management meetings. A goal was set: to halve CO2 emissions by 2030.
An important step toward that goal has now been taken with the construction of a new factory for the production of medium-voltage cables with thermoplastic insulation, TPI (which is more easily melted than today's PEX insulation), an outer sheath made with partially recycled PE, and conductors made from low-carbon aluminum.
The factory itself—a bright, quiet production unit that cost around SEK 100 million to build—was inaugurated on April 2 in front of just over a hundred invited guests, mostly from power grid companies.
There, they listened to an inspiring talk by Professor Tomas Kåberger, who began by congratulating the guests for working in an industry with a fantastic future now that Sweden is on its way to full electrification.
Solar and wind power are now not only cheaper to produce than thermal energy, he said, but increasingly affordable batteries can also be used to stabilize and balance electricity consumption.
"It is an impressive facility that Nexans has built. Investing in a more environmentally friendly cable is absolutely the right move—everyone needs to place greater focus on their environmental impact. At Gislaved Energi, we are constantly looking at how we can optimize our environmental efforts. We're already doing so by selling only renewable electricity, using vehicles powered by electricity or HVO, and now by installing networks with as low CO2 impact as possible. With the new medium-voltage cables, Nexans has raised awareness about the climate impact of cables. That's something we can highlight in our annual report. For us, local production is also important—that we can buy cable from a factory just twenty kilometers away instead of transporting cable over long distances.”
Jörgen Blomqvist,
Team Leader of Electricity, Gislaved Energi

Out in the new, 3,000-square-meter factory, enthusiastic machine operators were waiting to showcase the operation to visitors. They are very pleased with their new workplace—especially the tasks involved.
- It’s so bright and tidy here. And the job itself is super exciting—getting to fine-tune a completely new product, said Mattias Andersson.
Lars Josefsson sees the new factory as a major milestone.
- In 1968, we built the tower to produce PEX cable. This is just as big. Now we’re leading the way with a smart design that is both environmentally and technically sustainable,” said Lars Josefsson between tours.
In addition, the new cables fit into a Nordic strategy.
- Previously, we had to import medium-voltage cable from Italy, France, and Greece. Our goal is for 95 percent of the products we sell in the Nordics to be manufactured here. With this production, we’ve achieved that goal.
